Model:

Medieval gateway

This is a 1:25 scale model of a town gateway from Winchelsea, as it would have looked around 1310. The model was built from scratch, principally from plywood.

The first stage  was to build the interior with its vaulted ceiling. The vaulting was accurately reproduced down to details of the stone corbels and carvings over the internal doorways.

The vaulting and other internal details were painted in suitably bright colours…

Accessories such as the portcullises and doors were made from wood and mounting board.

The guard was made from wood and wire which was then coated with Milliput putty.

The outer walls were made from plywood, and the towers from laths on round formers.

The main components were screwed to a pre-built baseboard; the landscape was built up from plywood and wire netting.

An exterior staircase was made up from card.

The model was coated with polyfilla to give a smooth finish, and the roof made from mounting card.

Finally, the model was painted, and bushes added to the hillslope. The model was suitable ‘weathered’, with moss, lichen and algae added to the roof and exterior walls.
