Roman fort

The Roman fort at Ilchester, Somerset around AD 60. The timber fort has been hurried built between two branches of the River Yeo, adjacent to the local oppidum (native trading settlement). Above right can be seen an earlier, dismantled fort. Roman roads are in the process of construction, overlaying an earlier road layout. Much of the surrounding area is marshland.
